New Year’s Eve – Just Say No

By December 31, 2022Uncategorized

There are several reasons why Muslims should not celebrate New Year’s Eve, or any other holiday that is not specifically recognized in Islam. Some of the main reasons include:

Avoidance of idolatry: In Islam, the worship of any deity other than Allah is strictly prohibited. Many holidays, including New Year’s Eve, have pagan or idolatrous origins and may be associated with the worship of false gods or deities. For the Romans, New Year’s Day was a very important date, but the most interesting fact is that originally the Roman year didn’t start on January 1st, but in March. This was mainly because March was the month dedicated to Mars, the Roman god of war, which was also believed to be the divine father of Romulus, the founder of Rome. However, it was Julius Caesar in 46 BC, with his Julian Calendar, who permanently established the holiday on January 1st. Just like people now celebrate on the eve of a new year, the Romans would also feast the night before.

Focus on Islamic holidays: Muslims should focus their celebrations and observances on the holidays and events that are specifically recognized in Islam, such as Eid al-Fitr (Breaking Fast) and Eid al-Adha (Sacrifice). These holidays have significant meaning and significance within the Islamic faith and provide an opportunity for Muslims to come together and celebrate their faith.

Avoidance of immorality: Many New Year’s Eve celebrations involve the consumption of alcohol and other activities that are considered to be immoral or forbidden in Islam. Muslims should avoid participating in these activities in order to adhere to the principles of their faith.

Being distinct as a community of True Faith in the One True God: The Messenger Muhammad made sure to teach his community to be distinct and not to take part in any other religious or secular celebrations that glorify falsehood. This was a consistent teaching throughout his ministry and a legacy Muslims have followed throughout the ages.

Overall, there are several compelling reasons why Muslims should not celebrate New Year’s Eve or other holidays that are not specifically recognized in Islam – whether motivated by a desire to avoid idolatry, to focus on Islamic holidays, or to adhere to Islamic principles and a higher standard.

What if I only have a meal with my wife, without alcohol and without all the other things that Islam forbids? Only to be happy that we managed through another year?
